With a flood of votes cast, new WorldSpeak language tests are Chin, Czech, Turkish, Urdu and Amharic
As the testing season winds down and students celebrate the end of the school year and launch into summer, Avant begins planning for what new tests we will build for 2019. This year, we approached the process a little differently, asking our partners, teachers, language associations – YOU – which languages you most want to see.
The results were impressive, including a surprise write-in victory for Czech to claim the second spot in our top five. With a flood of votes, the new WorldSpeak languages will be:
We’re especially excited to be able to offer these new languages during a time when the value of being bilingual is becoming increasingly recognized by schools and employers.
The explosive growth of the Seal of Biliteracy has opened eyes and minds around the country. Avant believes passionately that equal opportunity is a right for all Americans, and that includes the right to receive credit for a language that you speak, whether you learned it in a classroom or at home. In most states, high school students can earn credit and/or the Seal of Biliteracy by demonstrating proficiency in a valid test. Yet, for many students that can be difficult or impossible because no test exists for their language, or available tests are too expensive.
This is why Avant launched the WorldSpeak online Writing and Speaking tests for Less Commonly Tested Languages in 2016. Avant now has ten WorldSpeak tests, and every year we add new language tests to our portfolio – like Armenian, Tamil, and Haitian Creole.
Now, we are thrilled to be able to say that with the addition of these new languages Avant will offer language proficiency tests in 30 different languages.
Thank you to all in the language community who took the time to vote – and for all you do to promote language learning every day.
Stay tuned for the launch of these new languages in 2019 and we can’t wait to congratulate students in the Class of 2019 who will become the first to earn a Seal of Biliteracy in Chin, Czech, Turkish, Urdu or Amharic!
