Preparing for Success
FOR TEACHERS AND TESTING COORDINATORS:
HOW TO HELP YOUR STUDENTS PREPARE FOR THE TEST
The Avant STAMP™ (STAndards-based Measurement of Proficiency) language test enables teachers to be effective in improving proficiency outcomes by delivering accurate data on students’ proficiency levels. Leading language programs use Avant STAMP™ as a measure for student growth, to qualify for the state or Global Seal of Biliteracy, and to award Competency-Based Credits.
Teachers can learn about the test and help test takers do their best by completing the following tasks:
Before the Test
Review the following Avant STAMP User Guides and Resources:
Distribute and discuss the following guides with your students. They explain what students need to demonstrate in their responses for the writing and speaking sections to achieve a certain level of language proficiency.

Writing Examples Guide
Read the Avant STAMP Benchmark and Rubric Guides. The rubric guides outline in detail what expectations are placed upon the test takers for performance at any given level. Test takers who hope to score at a specific level know the characteristics of the work they must produce to achieve that level.

During the Test
Tests are taken in a proctored environment with no outside resources allowed Avant STAMP™ engages students with real-world content that is leveled according to the topics commonly taught at each level of instruction. STAMP’s adaptive test design adjusts to a student’s level so they are challenged, but not overwhelmed. And because STAMP is an adaptive test, it liberates students to show what they can do with the language – all the way up to the top of the Advanced level. All Avant proficiency tests are aligned to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines. The test has four sections – Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking
Avant STAMP tests are not timed. Students may pause and resume test between test sections. Estimated Avant STAMP tests completion times by domain:
Reading and Listening items are computer-scored and computer-adaptive (meaning that questions are selected based on previous responses, becoming easier or more difficult as needed to determine proficiency level).
We strongly recommend using headsets that completely cover the ears, blocking out much of the surrounding sound, with built-in microphones. Smaller earbuds or foam headsets that sit on top of the ear will not produce the best results in terms of sound quality. Please see our Headset Guide for more information.
Demonstrated ability on Reading and Listening sections facilitates the types of Writing and Speaking prompts the test taker will receive.
Please note that learners will need to provide typed writing samples in the Writing section. The method for inputting the language sample may differ, depending on the target language for the test. Please see our Writing Input Guide for language-specific directions.
Writing and Speaking items are scored by Avant’s trained raters who use a Scoring Rubric that lists the criteria for meeting Benchmark Levels

After the Test
Test results inform test takers and educators about learning progress and program effectiveness. Reading and Listening scores are available as soon as the test taker completes each section. Writing and Speaking items are scored by Avant’s trained raters who use a Scoring Rubric that lists the criteria for meeting Benchmark Levels.
Test results are not provided directly to test takers. All testing results will be delivered directly to the testing administrator after test completion. Test takers will need to contact their testing administrator to receive test results.
