Avant PLACE User Guides
Avant PLACE is an initial measurement of real-world language ability in Reading, Writing and Speaking used to inform appropriate placement of middle school, high school and college students into various levels of language instruction. Avant PLACE tests are web-based, do not need to be proctored, and can be taken by students prior to arriving at the place of instruction. Whether it’s the beginning of the school year or a mid-year addition to your program, Avant PLACE scores allow you to group and place students properly.
Avant PLACE engages students with everyday, real-world scenarios in which their skills are likely to be used, and can be completed quickly—students typically complete the Avant PLACE test in about 40 minutes. Avant PLACE is accessible anywhere there is Internet access, so students can demonstrate their skills at their convenience.
Avant PLACE Writing and Speaking results are scored externally by certified raters. All scores are typically available within 3 to 5 business days, and are reported for groups as well as individuals. Reports are exportable to Excel for flexible analysis, and educators have access to students’ Speaking and Writing samples.
Avant provides a general guide that outlines suggested course levels for students based upon their overall proficiency level scores from the Avant PLACE test. Avant realizes that each language program functions differently, and that the needs of each institution may require a more in-depth data analysis. Consulting is available to help you establish custom placement guidelines specific to your program.

The following is given as a general placement suggestion, based upon the elements assessed and the results attained. Please compare your program and course descriptions with the scenarios listed below in the “Description of Levels” column.
