Network/IT Coordinator Technology Guide for AvantProctor

Avant provides online language assessments. This technology guide provides the technical information about the computers and networks needed to take an Avant language proficiency assessment and/or use with our instructional tools.

IMPORTANT: Ensure this technology guide is distributed to both your network administrator, as well as the person who is responsible for the preparation and setup of computers in your lab or testing area. It is recommended to also have an IT staff member on hand during testing to help with computer, audio and microphone issues, should they occur.

Email Whitelist Preparation

For students to receive emails with instructions to schedule, prepare, and take their test, and reminders of their upcoming test, we require that all emails from be allowed. The only communications allowed to a test taker are those that directly concern their test. No other communications are permitted by Avant, for example, ads.

We try and limit our communication to any test taker to the following email address:

Support [at] avantassessment [dot] com
NoReply [at] avantassessment [dot] com
AvantProctor [at] avantassessment [dot] com

Networking Requirements

The following section pertains specifically to network setup for the locations where testing will occur:

Domain Names

Firewalls, Proxy Servers and Content Filters need to be set to NOT proxy, filter, cache or block the Avant domain names on the ports listed below. All inbound and outbound traffic for the applicable domain names shown below must be whitelisted. If your system does not allow whitelisting of domain names, please contact us at .

Please ensure inbound and outbound HTTP/HTTPS (TCP 80, 443) * is open and whitelisted for the following domains:

  • * (This is our primary application domain)
  • * (
  • * (Powers our patent-pending Next Generation Platform)
  • o – Signaling – GLL (Global Low Latency)
  • o – Signaling – GLL (Global Low Latency)
  • o chunderw-vpc-gll-{region} – Signaling – Regional

(Regions: au1, br1, de1, ie1, jp1, sg1, us1)

  • o – Insights
  • o (Listening to recordings)

To record voice please ensure that RTP, STUN, and TURN traffic is allowed to UDP ports 3478 and 10,000 – 20,000 for the Twilio IPs for your region.

  • Static IP ranges for Twilio may be found here:
  • EG – Most US schools use – , –†
  • † Twilio will update these ranges over time, current ranges are listed at the link above.

*Additional networking requirements may apply to legacy systems.

Note on Firewalls

Your firewall should allow outgoing UDP to the public internet from the browsers that will be using Twilio Client, and allow return traffic in response.

Twilio provides a helpful diagnostic tool for checking your connection and whitelisting here.

If you are operating a restricted network that requires whitelisting of media IPs, the region-specific IP addresses may be found here

Client Bandwidth

10 Mbps of available bandwidth per test taker is recommended.

Testing Equipment Preparation

The following information pertains to setup of computers that will be used for testing:

  • Computer with internet connection and supported browser
  • One monitor, keyboard and mouse

Cable Modem, DSL or better (10 MB/s upload/download speed)

Keyboard Character Activation

Most Avant tests include a writing section where a virtual keyboard may be needed for typing appropriate characters. Activate the appropriate language keyboard (Writing Input Guide)

Headset Guidelines

For information on audio settings and troubleshooting recording issues see the Headset Guide.

Security Preparation

Before completing an Avant Assessment on a personal device, we suggest completing a virus check on the operating system on that device. This is to ensure that there is no malware present on the device that could compromise the testing data. If on your testing date, you try to login to an Avant test and you are unable to enter the test, you will have to reschedule your test and complete a virus check or use a different device altogether.
