AVANTPROCTOR

AvantProctor utilizes the power of video communication to allow Test Takers to take a test normally completed in a classroom setting at home, with an online human proctor. Avant has ensured that AvantProctor meets our most rigorous standards for security to maintain the integrity of our language assessments. Avant’s highly trained proctors use our secure platform that provides screen recording activity as well as the video feed from the test-taker’s computer camera. The proctor confirms the test taker’s identity and actively monitors the test. The proctor can then interact with the test taker to assure that no cheating is occurring and confirm that the test is secure and not compromised.

IMPORTANT:
We do not recommend tablets or iPads for testing and remote proctoring at the same time. While it is possible to take an Avant assessment on an iPad, if the Test Taker is being remotely proctored on the same device, the Avant Assessment application would be unable to access the microphone in order to record for the speaking section.

WE RECOMMEND TO COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING STEPS AT LEAST 48 HOURS PRIOR TO THE SCHEDULED TEST TIME:

  1. Take a Sample Test for the language you are testing to confirm the following:
    • You can record and playback your Speaking response
    • You can type your Writing response in the language you are testing. Refer to our Writing Input Guide to see which languages require special keyboards
    • Your equipment is configured properly and all technology preparation steps are completed before registering for a remote proctored test

Refer to the Test Taker Technology Guide to troubleshoot any issues and to make sure your system is properly configured.

2. Complete System Requirements check by following the Test Access Link in the confirmation or reminder emails to make sure your system is properly configured.

For Mac users: Follow these troubleshooting tips if you are experiencing any issues with your microphone, camera or screen sharing controls.

Technology Guides

These documents provide technical information relative to computers and networks to help prepare for using Avant assessments and/or instructional tools.

Note: Ensure this information is distributed to both your network administrator, as well as the person who is responsible for preparation and setup of computers in your lab or testing area. It is recommended to also have an IT staff member on hand during testing to help with computer, audio and microphone issues, should they occur.

Testing Area

  1. The room must be as quiet as possible. Sounds such as music or television are not permitted.
  2. No other person is allowed to enter the room while you are taking the proctored exam.
  3. The lighting in the room must be bright enough to be considered “daylight” quality. Overhead lighting is preferred. If overhead lighting is not available, the source of light must not be behind you.
  4. You must sit at a clean desk or table.
  5. The desk or walls around you must not have any writing.
  6. No dictionaries, textbooks, cell phones, paper, pens, or other support materials are allowed in the testing area during the test.

Test Taker Computer

  1. The computer you are using to take the exam must not have more than one display or monitor. For example, if you usually use a laptop with a monitor connected, disconnect your monitor and use only the laptop screen.
  2. No additional applications (e.g., Word, email, chat) or browser windows are allowed to be open during testing

Test Taker Behavior

  1. You must verify your identity using a photo ID that has your name and photo on the same side.
  2. You must dress as though you were in a public setting.
  3. You must not communicate with any other person by any means.
  4. You must not use a phone for any reason.
  5. You must not leave the room during the exam for any reason.
  6. Do not take or use notes of any kind for any portion of the test, including the speaking section.
  7. Do not write down a speaking response and read it as your recorded response. It will lower your score for that response, and it may be scored as a ZERO because it involves the use of paper or reference material.
  8. Avant raters review all written and spoken responses and any inappropriate responses (vulgar, violent, etc.) will be assigned as Not Ratable (NR) and will be reported to your test administrator.
  9. Failure to comply with any of these directions or any other inappropriate behavior will be recorded and reported to your testing administrator.
