Overview

Avant Assessment’s online language proficiency tests must be taken in a proctored environment with a proctor who is authorized by the organization sponsoring the test.

This document provides information on one-to-one or one-to-many proctoring (if you have the technology to do so) when utilizing the video communications platforms Zoom, Google Meet, Skype, etc. Please be aware that Avant cannot guarantee that it will be able to provide tech support for these platforms.

When electing to use a non-Avant supported platform, please sign the Remote Proctoring Waiver Form.

Before Starting Your Proctored Session

  • Sign the Remote Proctoring Waiver Form

  • Choose your platform: Zoom, Google Hangouts, Skype, etc

  • Have the Test Codes and Passwords ready

  • Have student ID number available for the Test Taker ID field on the Student Profile

    • We recommend that you create a list of Login Names for students to use and keep it for easy reference. Students must use the exact same login credentials when they login to resume testing.

  • When testing in a character-based language, provide test takers with instructions for selecting the input language. For more information, see the Writing Input Guide.

  • Confirm that the test taker has reviewed the Assessment Technology Guide to ensure the computer has been configured correctly

  • Ensure the test taker has also taken a Sample Test in the language being tested to confirm the computer is configured properly and all technology preparation steps are complete before registering for the test.

  • Inform test takers how much time is allowed for this testing session

  • Inform student if photo ID will be necessary

  • Confirm your organization’s course of action regarding academic dishonesty.

  • Determine a plan of action if the test taker loses internet connection and needs to resume the test

  • Schedule a testing session with the student at your convenience.

    • We suggest scheduling the testing session with the student during Avant’s support hours (See support hours below)

TEST TAKER TIPS FOR SUCCESS

Read the following guides that explain what you need to demonstrate in your responses for the writing and speaking sections to achieve a certain level.

Rules for Taking a Remote Proctored Avant Assessment

  • Use a private testing area and turn off all noise-making devices

  • No dictionaries, text books, cell phones, paper, pens, or other support materials are allowed in the testing area during the test.

  • Do not take or use notes of any kind for any portion of the test, including the speaking section.

  • You can only take 1 short break between test sections.

  • Complete all sections of the test until the screen says, “Congratulations! You have completed the test!” Please click the Stop Test link to logout.

To Begin Testing

Proctor will:

  • Direct the test taker to the Avant Test website (app.avantassessment.com/test) link

  • Have the test taker use their computer webcam to show the testing environment

  • Have the test taker share their screen and forward-facing camera to monitor the test taker and their surroundings

  • Verbally provide Test Code and Password (do not send to the test taker via any chat method).

  • Instruct test taker to click on ‘Start a New Test

  • Provide guidance for filling in the Login Name field:

    • Login Name must be unique within the testing group

  • Provide instructions for filling in the Student ID field on the Student Profile

  • Specify in what order the test sections should be taken:

    • Reading must be taken before Writing, and Listening must be taken before Speaking.

  • Provide instructions for stopping the test at a certain point or directions to continue until the test is complete

During the Assessment

  • Direct test taker to read the instructions in each section of the test carefully.

  • Continuously monitor the test taker to ensure academic honesty during the test.

  • If you see suspicious activity, looking off-screen for too long, for instance, please ask the test taker to scan the room again using their webcam.

  • As a proctor, you can assist test takers with logging in, answering their profile questions, selecting the Writing input language (if testing in Arabic, Chinese or Japanese…), proper use of their recording equipment, computer issues and resuming a test.

  • Do not help with anything that is related to the content of the test.

  • During the Speaking section, make sure test takers are recording successfully.

  • If a test taker needs to resume the test due to lost connection (or any other reason), the login information will need to be entered exactly as originally entered. Instruct test takers to click on Continue Test after re-entering the test code and password. The test taker should resume from the point at which they left off. If necessary, the teacher or proctor can use the Teacher Login to look up the test taker’s Login Name.

After the Assessment

When the test taker has completed a test, you will see a screen that says “Congratulations! You have completed the test!”
Please direct the test taker to click the “Stop Test” link to log out.

All testing results will be delivered directly to the testing administrator within 5 to 12 business days of test completion (depending on the assessment being taken).
