IMPORTANT: We do not recommend tablets or iPads for testing and remote proctoring at the same time. WE RECOMMEND TO COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING STEPS AT LEAST 48 HOURS PRIOR TO THE SCHEDULED TEST TIME:
    1. Take a Sample Test for the language you are testing to confirm the following:
      • You can record and playback your Speaking response

Testing Area
  1. The room must be as quiet as possible. Sounds such as music or television are not permitted.
  2. No other person is allowed to enter the room while you are taking the proctored exam.
  3. The lighting in the room must be bright enough to be considered “daylight” quality. Overhead lighting is preferred. If overhead lighting is not available, the source of light must not be behind you.
  4. You must sit at a clean desk or table.
  5. The desk or walls around you must not have any writing.
  6. No dictionaries, textbooks, cell phones, paper, pens, or other support materials are allowed in the testing area during the test.
Test Taker Computer
  1. The computer you are using to take the exam must not have more than one display or monitor. For example, if you usually use a laptop with a monitor connected, disconnect your monitor and use only the laptop screen.
  2. No additional applications (e.g., Word, email, chat) or browser windows are allowed to be open during testing
Test Taker Behavior
  1. You must verify your identity using a photo ID that has your name and photo on the same side.

  3. You must not communicate with any other person by any means.
  4. You must not use a phone for any reason.
  5. You must not leave the room during the exam for any reason.
  6. Do not take or use notes of any kind for any portion of the test, including the speaking section.
  7. Do not write down a speaking response and read it as your recorded response. It will lower your score for that response, and it may be scored as a ZERO because it involves the use of paper or reference material.
  8. Avant raters review all written and spoken responses and any inappropriate responses (vulgar, violent, etc.) will be assigned as Not Ratable (NR) and will be reported to your test administrator.
  9. Failure to comply with any of these directions or any other inappropriate behavior will be recorded and reported to your testing administrator.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are a few of the most common questions regarding AvantProctor. Please reach out to us regarding any other questions you may have

Avant Tests are computer-adaptive, meaning that the level of question difficulty that a student is presented with is based on the number of correct answers they have logged so far in the assessment. The testing engine automatically adapts to each student’s level, up or down, as the test progresses. This approach was pioneered at Avant Assessment, the first company to develop commercial-grade, multi-stage, computer-adaptive tests for language learning, beginning in 2001.

You can test in any of the languages listed in our Avant STAMP Products.

Yes, as long as there is a current browser and connection to the Internet

We do not recommend tablets or iPads for testing and remote proctoring at the same time. While it is possible to take an avant assessment on an iPad, if the student is being remotely proctored on the same device, the Avant Assessment application would be unable to access the microphone in order to record for the speaking section

We strongly recommend using USB style headphones that completely cover the ears, blocking out much of the surrounding sound, with built-in microphones. Smaller earbuds or foam headsets that sit on top of the ear will not produce the best results in terms of sound quality.
Please see our Headset Guide for further information.

All of Avant’s tests include a Writing section in which learners will need to provide typed writing samples. The method for inputting the language sample may differ, depending on the target language for the test. Please see our Writing Guide for language-specific directions.

No, a handwritten Writing section option is not available for Avant Test proctored with AvantProctor.

No, you cannot continue a proctored Avant Test without a proctor. If you log out or get disconnected, follow your Test Access Link from your confirmation email (or a reminder emai) to access a proctored Avant Test.

Reading and Listening items are computer-scored and computer-adaptive (meaning that questions are selected based on previous responses, becoming easier or more difficult as needed to determine proficiency level).

Writing and Speaking items are scored by Avant’s trained raters who use a Scoring Rubric (STAMP 4S) that lists the criteria for meeting Benchmark Levels.

Test results are delivered to your school’s test administrator after test completion. Test takers should contact their school’s testing administrator to receive test results.
